Mark Greenberg

I'm a Philadelphian who came to Vermont in 1970 via the University of Chicago. From 1991-2003, I served on the faculty of Goddard College in American/Cultural Studies and Humanities. I also helped organize the Goddard faculty's NEA-affiliated union and am proud that Goddard became one of the few unionized private colleges in the U.S. Sadly, the Goddard Board closed the residential undergraduate program in 2003, ending a significant chapter in the history of American progressive education. But that's another story.

I've been involved in education, the arts, and culture, in one way or another, for a long time. I was a founder of the Philadelphia Folk Workshop in the 1960s, and in the early 1970s I directed the Montpelier Educational Facility, an alternative high school.  I'm also a former Director of the Montpelier-based Onion River Arts Council and for 12 years was producer/host of "On & On," a program of traditional folk music, on WNCS-FM. I've worked as a freelance writer and editor, produced radio features and documentaries for National Public Radio and have served as Record Review Editor of Sing Out! Magazine.  I've served on the boards of the Pyralisk Arts Center, the Vermont American Civil Liberties Union,  & The Barre (VT) Historical Society/Old Labor Hall.

Along the way, I've played guitar (and occasionally banjo) with, among others, The Original South Side Jug Band and the Lake Country String Band in Chicago and Coco & the Lonesome Road Band and Bob Yellin & the Joint Chiefs of Bluegrass in Vermont. I even got to play at Lincoln Center in New York as a member of the late Dave Van Ronk's Paleolithica Pro-Moosica Jug Band. I currently play with Anything Goes and Good Old Wagon. And, when time permits, I produce concerts, including a not-so-annual multi-media tribute to American balladeer Woody Guthrie.

In addition, I run Upstreet Productions, specializing in folk music and arts consulting, producing, writing, and editing and in video and audio projects primarily, but not exclusively, involving traditional folk music and oral history. I've also produced recordings for Pete Seeger , Dave Van Ronk , Michael " Beausoleil "Doucet, Jane Sapp & the Dream Project, Doc Watson, and others.
